About the Author
John Safer was born in 1922 in Washington, DC. He received a degree in economics from George Washington University and then served four years in the Air Force during World War II. After the War, he earned a law degree from Harvard Law School. After law school, he worked for the next four years as Program Director for a television station in Cleveland, Ohio. He then returned to Washington and became a real estate developer, building and operating apartment houses, office buildings, and shopping centers. In the 1970s, he entered the banking field, spending the last decade of his business career as Chairman of the Board of Sovran DC National Bank.
Beginning in the 1950s, Safer became a self-taught sculptor. In time his work achieved recognition, and he was given a show at the American Embassy in London, which led to his gaining international acclaim. Today his sculptures are in museums, embassies, universities, and private collections around the world. He is noted for his monumental works. Among these are “Ascent” at the National Air and Space Museum, “Judgment” at Harvard Law School, “Leading Edge” at the Bank of America in Norfolk, Virginia, and “Unity” at the MGM hotel at National Harbor.
Today, John Safer continues to work at his sculpture in conjunction with his daughter, Kathryn Scott, who is now a full partner. In addition, Kathryn is in charge of all production and installation of Safer’s work.
